Our Ideal Bedroom Square-Footage
Note: this is just a general rule, it doesn't always apply to every home
How big does a bedroom need to be?
We love a cozy bedroom. So as a disclaimer, this is a general rule - it doesn't apply to every home and if your room is bigger or smaller, you didn't make a mistake. There are so many elements of a room that could change the space needed for a bedroom (ie: fireplace, walk in closet, etc.).
In a primary bedroom, our ideal size for a primary bedroom is anywhere from 15 - 17 feet wide and 14 - 16 feet deep. We’ve found that anything larger than this can feel too open, less cozy, and can be harder to furnish. It’s not just our opinion - when we shared this on our Instagram, we were flooded with comments from people who have larger bedrooms who felt like they were floating in a large empty room or that the sofa in their bedroom served more as a laundry basket than a place to relax.
In guest rooms and kid bedrooms, our ideal size is anywhere from 13 - 15 feet wide and 12 - 14 feet long. We prefer to save square footage in the bedrooms for other areas of the home that might need it more.
If you do want a bigger bedroom, we like to create a nook rather just having furniture open and floating. Creating zones (or nooks) to ground the room and make it feel more comfortable and functional.
The design above by Kylee Shintaffer is a great example of a bedroom with a defined zone
We’d love to hear your opinion - what do you think is the ideal bedroom size? If you do love and have a larger bedroom, we want to hear all about it. What are other things you can do do make a bedroom feel extra cozy?
