What is a base paint color—and why does it matter? We like to think of the base color as the default backdrop in your house that ties everything together. Most often, a base color is a soft neutral or a clean white, and should enhance the flow of your home, supporting accent colors or standing beautifully on its own.

Even if you’re just using this “base color” for a few rooms, it’s the neutral color that needs to go with everything else in the house. Here are a few places where you’ll use it:

  • hallways

  • doors

  • trim/baseboards
